Joaquin Phoenix’s acceptance speech for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama prize at the Golden Globe Awards was cut short on Sunday as the actor failed to hit the mark.

The Joker star’s win was met with rapturous applause from the crowd at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, but things turned awkward when the star began to give his thanks.

He began by praising his fellow nominees for their “beautiful, mesmerizing work”, and noted that a few actors had reached out to him, joking he felt intimidated by them though they “shared the same agent.”

Joaquin went on to thank director Todd Phillips, calling him an “amazing friend and collaborator,” before ending the speech with a plea to help the Australian bushfire relief efforts.

“I don’t want to rock the boat, it’s really nice that so many people have well-wishes to Australia, but we have to do more than that … hopefully, we can be unified,” he said. “It’s great to vote but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves.”

However, the actor was cut short as he was eventually played off by music, when it appeared he was beginning to call out actors for taking private jets due to their impact on the environment.

He also appeared disgruntled when he was apparently “tricked” into the backstage press room by someone who told him it was just for photos, and dissatisfaction continued when a reporter asked him about the process of preparing for his role in the box office hit.

“Isn’t this old news?” Phoenix snapped back. “I think I’ve talked about this for six months. I mean, right? I feel like I answered these questions. You want to hear a different version of it? I can try to change it slightly, or what should I do?”

Joaquin apparently went on to question the reporters as to whether they were “bored” at the ceremony, before offering a lecture on the “drastic and vast consequence” of consuming animal products and the widespread benefits of veganism.
